COMMUNITY SERVICE

Every member of our Guild is encouraged to contribute to Community Service.

Each year we donate quilts, Christmas Stockings, pillowcases, and other items to organizations that help children, teenagers and adults in transition. We donate to pediatric and neo-natal units in hospitals, and to other charitable organizations dear to the hearts of our members.

Members may make any of the above items at home using their own stash, or at any Guild meeting may pick up quilt  kits that include fabric, batting and a pattern. Members can choose to do an entire quilt, or any part. For example, kits are available for cutting and piecing, or quilting, or binding only.

See the bottom of this page for instructions for pillowcases, stockings, and necessities pillows.

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

Each year we make Christmas stockings and donate them to the River Oak Center for Children.  This year we gave them 260 Christmas stockings.

The River Oak Center is a four site, 1000+ client mental health provider for low income children.  At their two-day Santa’s workshop, organized by one of our members, parents and caregivers are invited to come in and select a stocking (made by Pioneer members), a book (thanks to the generosity of Barnes & Noble’s book drive in November/December) and a gift for each of their children.  As toy donations come in they separate the smaller stocking stuffer items and ask the parents to select a small gift from that table to help them start their stockings.  When parents come in they are welcomed with punch and cookies and they start by selecting stockings and books; then go into the toy room to select gifts; then have them gift wrapped by volunteers. For many of their clients, this will be the sum of their Christmas.

We are told that the Pioneer Guild’s support has brought many smiles through the years and every stocking is very much appreciated.

If anyone is interested in volunteering, they can call member Alice Gentry at work at 916-609-5129 or at home.

NECESSITIES PILLOWS

Necessities Bag, Inc. is a non profit organization that provides a “bag of goodies” to mastectomy patients. The contents of the bag are items that will assist them in their recovery from surgery. Included are soft little pillows, made by Pioneer Guild, that can be used under the arm as support and comfort.

The Necessites, Inc. mission is to support mastectomy patients with the Necessities Bag, which gives information and supplies to aid recovery and provide a resource for surgeons and nurses to improve communication with patients about the challenges of major surgery.
